Here's the roof of a Certified Preowned BMW M3 that my customer purchased earlier this year. He wasn't made aware that was he was seeing were signs of a repaint. Under the lighting in my garage, it's plainly evident that this isn't typical factory paint. After checking the paint thickness, I wetsanded starting with 3 grades of Unigrit starting with 2000 grit and ending with 3000. I then compounded with M105 and a wool pad and the rotary, and finished it off with Prima Swirl on an orange pad and white pad. This writeup is not a full restore. This is a potential future customer who was referred to me by another customer. Part of my job is to help others identify problems with their paint so they can seek further recourse. In this case, the owner bought this BMW without realizing it was repainted and the dealership made no mention of it.
I taped off a square
Wetsanded with 2000, 2500, 3000
Can you see the difference after compounding with M105?
More work is obviously needed but this was just to show the customer that the paint could be significantly improved through wetsanding and polishing instead of a full repaint.
Wow Richard that is pretty bad. I'm sure it'll be less expensive for the owner to pay for restoring the paint rather than repainting for the time being. He'll have a more than decent looking car until he can gather up enough coin to actually do a repaint.
Agreed. The only problem is that he wants it perfect, and I'm not sure I can make it to his expectations. I tried sanding the hood and it looked much better but wasn't perfect. I did the roof next because the condition was very noticeable before working and verified that the paint problems were in the clear and not under it. Most likely I will end up restoring the paint for him though he's also considering a full repaint by my shop guys.
I used a soft block. It was actually a Wet Wedge soft block as seen here. I used the flat side. Remember, I didn't block the whole car, just these spots so we could determine the corrective action.

I'd love to see the results too! lol. But I'm just waiting on the customer to decide what he wants to do, whether me wetsand and polish or repaint the whole car.
