Evo with Paint Problem on Hood

Look at what came in from the rain??

Clay does nothing for it. Steve at OC Rod looked at it, and said that it would have to be repainted.

Before I post the next shots, can anyone guess whether this is fixable through paint removal techniques?

Re: Evo with Paint Problem on Hood

Given it's location I'm guessing it's paint damaged from excessive heat off the turbo-charger and high underhood temps.. I think there's a chance of fixing it but it's going to remove a lot of the clearcoat and it will happen again.

Re: Evo with Paint Problem on Hood

Yep that's what I thought as well. Ok, so since you took the bait, here are the results.

I clayed the area and made it smoother but didn't do anything for the problem. I then masked it for my test spot.

I opted to use a PC with a white pad and Swirl.

The owner said that he's had other detailers do absolutely nothing like this change before his very eyes so he was impressed.

Process was PC on speed 5 with LC white pad and Swirl. 2 passes.
PC on speed 5 with LC white pad and Amigo 1 pass
Then BG two coats.

He bought the Prima products on the spot to finish it off himself and couldn't wait to show his friends what he discovered.

He stopped by the next day to buy some more products and said that it looked the same and the water beading on that side looked fantastic.

He's a member of SCD so maybe he will chime in.

For anyone else reading this...note that the customer didn't come to have me detail his car. He came to buy Prima products as another SCD member suggested he visit me instead of ordering them from my online store. Customers are always welcome to stop by..by appointment only please..to see what Prima can do for them before purchasing. You might learn a few techniques along the way as well. =P

Re: Evo with Paint Problem on Hood

He might want to get some sort of heat-shield and an under-hood liner to prevent that from happening again as quickly, older DSMs had this problem way back when and Mitsubishi's black paint doesn't have a stellar track record.

Re: Evo with Paint Problem on Hood

Well he's had the car for over a year and only noticed it recently when it went into a body shop to have something parts fixed on the rear of the car...not exactly sure what that means or how its even related. He also said none of his friends had it, so he was surprised to see it happen. I asked if he had changed anything under the hood and he said no.

Cool to know that it's common though.

Re: Evo with Paint Problem on Hood

I've never seen the problems on an EVO but a quick search of Mitsubishi Black Paint on Google turns up a lot of information on it.

Hey Richard would you say the paint is on the softer side? Paint turned out looking great on the test spot.
